RAVINE WOODLAND MANAGEMENT HANDBOOK

The Ravine Woodland Management Handbook was published in 2007 and includes the following documents produced by consultants working on the Project studies (covering topics relating to the management of ravine woodland habitats).

The Markets for Timber and Non-Timber Products Arising from the Conservation Management of Ravine Woodlands in the Peak District   Download
Study report assessing the current and potential markets for timber and non-timber products arising from the conservation management of ravine woodlands in the Peak District Dales SAC. The report also assesses the in-direct economic value of these woodlands in comparison to their direct economic value. Report prepared by Rural Development Initiatives. 44pp.
The Markets for Timber and Non-Timber Products Arising from the Conservation Management of Ravine Woodlands in the Wye Valley    Download
Study report assessing the current and potential markets for timber and non-timber products arising from the conservation management of ravine woodlands in the Wye Valley Woodlands SAC. The report also assesses the in-direct economic value of these woodlands in comparison to their direct economic value. Report prepared by Rural Development Initiatives. 44pp
Project Overview   Download
A lay persons report outlining the Ravine WoodLIFE project. Includes an overview of ravine woodlands and why they are important; how these woodlands are threatened; what lessons have been learnt; and what the Project has achieved. 12pp
Managing Sycamore in Semi-Natural Woodlands   Download
This report aimed to summarise and apply the findings of an MSc study into the regeneration patterns of sycamore in the Ravine WoodLIFE Project area. The study addressed: the status of sycamore; the regenerative abilities of both ash and sycamore, looking for evidence of replacement of one species by the other; and the presence and diversity of ground flora species under ash and sycamore canopies. The report was edited by forestry consultant, Roland Stiven, and is based on research by Neil Riddle of the Forestry Commission. 28pp
Grazing Management of Ravine Woodland and Associated Habitats   Download
This report aims to provide guidance for the implementation of conservation grazing management by domestic or wild animals that would optimise wildlife value. The report identifies the underlying factors resulting in uncontrolled grazing and analyses the economic and non-economic costs and benefits to landowners. The report was prepared by Dr Sarah Toogood and Vilas Anthwal of Just Ecology. 52pp
Coppice Management   Download
Innovative approaches to delivering the conservation benefits of coppice management. The report investigates the sustainable delivery of conservation benefits from coppice management. The various approaches to coppice management and the habitat requirements of species are discussed. The economic viability of coppice management in ravine woodlands is assessed. Report prepared by Rural Development Initiatives. 36pp
